Waste Incineration BREF 2017: drafting the waste-to-energy future

The BREF standards outlining the Best Available Technologies (BAT) are currently undergoing a revision, which will determine the permitted emissions and pollution levels across the EU countries. On first reading, the proposed BREF seems far more ambitious and somewhat stricter than the current emission standards for waste-to-energy plants. Indonesia's 17,000 islands are literally surrounded by a sea of garbage. It's now time to clean it up. The Indonesian government has set ambitious goals for addressing waste management and energy recovery. Denmark is providing assistance in terms of both a framework and technology. Together with Fortum, Babcock & Wilcox Vølund is developing Indonesia's first waste-to-energy plant.

Sister boiler for Boden in record time

The relationship has lasted for 20 years, and a new joint project has just confirmed that B&W Vølund and Bodens Energi AB still have much to offer one another. Reliability and the many-year relationship are essential, not least when the projects carried out at the polar plant are under pressure. In this case, a brand new waste boiler has to be installed by the 2017 Christmas holiday.

The problem that resulted in unforeseen benefits

A telephone call from Kiruna, Sweden, to Esbjerg, Denmark, resulted in the modification of the plant's two biofuel boilers. When Peter Enemærke had Kiruna Kraft on the line, he learned that the furnaces at the Swedish district heating plant were running too hot. The solution would be a step-by-step revamp process involving larger heating surfaces, new grates, pumps and heat exchangers. The process has resulted in significantly less maintenance and 5 MW of added heat.

Makeover: new life for old boilers

Finely tuned state-of-the-art plant. This might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about 20-year old, well-used, waste-fired boilers at Fynsværket. Nevertheless, the residents of Odense and the surrounding areas will get their heating next year from a plant that is as good as new. Fjernvarme Fyn is investing a quarter of a billion Danish kroner to give the old boilers new lease of life and a boost for waste-to-energy in Funen.
