How waste-to-energy works

A waste-to-energy plant converts solid waste into electricity and/or heat - an ecological, cost-effective way of energy recovery.

A waste-to-energy plant converts municipal and industrial solid waste into electricity and/or heat for industrial processing and for district heating systems – an ecologically sound, cost-effective means of energy recovery. The energy plant works by burning waste at high temperatures and using the heat to make steam. The steam then drives a turbine that creates electricity.

Waste-to-energy is a way to recover valuable resources

Waste-to-energy isn’t just a trash disposal method. It’s a way to recover valuable resources. Waste-to-energy is a vital part of a sustainable waste management chain and is fully complementary to recycling.

Today, it is possible to reuse 90 % of the metals contained in the bottom ash. And the remaining clinker can be reused as road material.

Convert waste to energy and you can recover 2/3 as CO2-neutral fuel

Waste-to-energy is one of the most robust and effective alternative energy options to reduce CO2 emissions and replace fossil fuels.

Approximately 2/3 of household waste is categorised as biomass. Therefore, we can recover 2/3 as CO2-neutral energy and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

European waste-to-energy plants have the lowest level of emissions of all industrial sectors. In fact, emissions from our facilities are healthier to breathe than the air in many cities.

Our NextBAT® technology guarantees very high efficiency (99%) and ultra-low emissions (95-99%). NextBAT® is the product of years of research, and is the answer to the needs of future generations of waste-to-energy plants.

We aim for high efficiency and low emissions

Our on-going research focuses on ways to eliminate 100% of the emissions and residue. In Europe 50 million tons of waste is converted into valuable energy through waste-to-energy technology, supplying 27 million Europeans with electricity. Still, 50% of municipal solid waste becomes landfill. This releases greenhouse gasses like methane which is 21 times more powerful than CO2. Our waste-to-energy technology eliminates these emissions.

Our goals are two-fold: to make sure your needs are met in terms of energy production and efficiency, and to reduce our environmental footprint. Achieving maximum energy efficiency with minimum by-products is our ultimate goal. We are very close; in fact we are 99% of the way there.
