Babcock & Wilcox Vølund licensee, JFE Engineering, sells first biomass updraft gasification power plant in JapanJFE Engineering in Japan has signed its first contract for an advanced biomass gasification plant based on the Babcock & Wilcox Vølund updraft gasifier technology. 2000 kW of power on the basis of 60 tons of wood-chips per day
The new plant is owned by Yamagata Green Power Co. Ltd. and will be located in Murayama City in Yamagata Prefecture. Operation is expected to begin in February 2007. “Our plant is the first high efficiency state of the art combined heat and power plant based on an updraft gasifier in Japan. It is likely that many such high efficiency plants are required in Japan for power generaton based on biomass. Therefore, this plant becomes a very important initiative in the Japanese renewable energy sector to help increase the biomass share out of the total energy in Japan and to meet the targets in the Kyoto protocol" says Mr. Suzuki, President of Yamagata Green Power Co. Ltd. The project has received support from the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry).
