Great demand for biomass technologies

At Babcock & Wilcox Vølund our mission is to create a better society through new technologies for environmentally sound energy production.

The increasing interest for the CO2 neutral and environmentally friendly energy is reflected in the rapid demand for our biomass technology.

Our biomass solutions are designed for the fuels wood chips, straw, bran, and RDF. We are also capable of supplying multi-fired plants. The Strängnäs plant is an example of a multi-fuel fired power plant which is designed to meet future requirements and is capable of burning a wide range of biomass and sorted waste fuels.

Current projects

Biowanze, Belgium

One of our current projects is Biowanze, the bran-fired steam boiler which will supply steam for a new bioethanol factory in Wanze, Belgium.

Biowanze will have a nominal capacity of 100 t/h steam and heating values at 13.5-17 MJ/kg. Recently, the site became open and the construction work is now taking place.

The plant will assume commercial operation in the autumn of 2008.

The Yamagata gasification plant in Murayama City, Japan

The Yamagata plant is an advanced biomass gasification plant based on the Babcock & Wilcox Vølund updraft gasifier technology. The Yamagata plant is the first biomass updraft gasification power plant in Japan built by JFE Engineering, a Babcock & Wilcox Vølund licensee.

The new plant is owned by Yamagata Green Power Co. Ltd. and will mainly be fired with wood-chips from cuttings of cherry trees.

The test operation began in spring 2007.
