Gasification technology

Babcock & Wilcox Vølund licensee, JFE Engineering, sells first biomass updraft gasification power plant in Japan

JFE Engineering in Japan has signed its first contract for an advanced biomass gasification plant based on the Babcock & Wilcox Vølund updraft gasifier technology.

2000 kW of power on the basis of 60 tons of wood-chips per day

The new plant is owned by Yamagata Green Power Co. Ltd. and will be located in Murayama City in Yamagata Prefecture. Operation is expected to begin in February 2007.
The plant will produce 2000 kW of power on the basis of 60 tons of wood-chips per day. The new biomass plant will mainly be fired with wood-chips from cuttings of cherry trees.

“Our plant is the first high efficiency state of the art combined heat and power plant based on an updraft gasifier in Japan. It is likely that many such high efficiency plants are required in Japan for power generaton based on biomass. Therefore, this plant becomes a very important initiative in the Japanese renewable energy sector to help increase the biomass share out of the total energy in Japan and to meet the targets in the Kyoto protocol" says Mr. Suzuki, President of Yamagata Green Power Co. Ltd.

The project has received support from the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry).

A long time partnership

The license agreement between JFE Engineering and Babcock & Wilcox Vølund highlights the two companies’ commitment to serve the Asian region with novel renewable energy technology.

JFE Engineering Co. is a long time partner of Babcock & Wilcox Vølund and our relationship reaches back more than 30 years. Both companies have various mutual agreements between them for utilizing their novel proprietary technologies.
