Contract for a waste fired steam boiler for Tafjord Kraftvarme AS, Ålesund, Norway

22 MWt waste fired steam boiler for Tafjord Kraftvarme AS

Babcock & Wilcox Vølund A/S (BWV) and Tafjord Kraftvarme AS have signed a contract for the supply of a new 22 MWt waste fired steam boiler for Tafjord Kraftvarme AS in Ålesund, Norway.

The plant is based on an air-cooled Vølund waste grate with a maximum continuous load of 10.4 tons of waste per hour at a calorific value of 8.5 MJ/kg.

Tafjord KraftvarmeAS received their first VølundSystems™ plant in 1987. The new plant meets all new statutory requirements and supplies steam at 40 bara / 400 ºC to a steam turbine. The surplus heat is delivered to the district heating network of Ålesund.

Together with the company ETKAB, Babcock & Wilcox Vølund will supply the complete electro-mechanical scope. The flue gas cleaning equipment is not included in the BWV scope of work, as an upgrade of the existing equipment will be carried out by the customer. The BWV scope of supply includes primarily the grate and boiler, whereas ETK AB supply the steam turbine, waste cranes and electrical and DCS system.

The schedule runs from contract signing, with expected site opening in October 2008 and handover before Christmas 2009.
