Contract for new multiple fuel fired CHP plant in Strängnäs, Sweden
Babcock & Wilcox Vølund sign contract for a 200 million DKK plant than meets EU requirements for reduction of greenhouse gasses.
Latest technology in biomass and waste incineration boilers
In January 2007 Babcock & Wilcox Vølund and Strängnäs Energi AB signed a contract for the supply of a new multiple fuel fired combined heat and power plant for the city of Strängnäs, which is situated approx. 75 km west of Stockholm.
This contract marks the start of a new generation of plants capable of burning a wide range of biomass and sorted waste fuels. The new plant is a combination of the latest technologies for combustion of biomass and boilers for incineration of waste.
Designed to meet future requirements
The new multiple fuel fired combined heat and power plant will cover the future need for advanced technology for exploiting all of our resources. New fuels, ranging from sorted industrial waste to wood chips, will contribute towards meeting the EU requirements for a reduction in the emission of the greenhouse gas and at the same time make us less dependent on fossil fuels such as coal and oil. This is very much in keeping with the latest energy proposal from the Danish government.
Important reference
Strängnäs CHP will be an important reference for Babcock & Wilcox Vølund. Basically, the plant is designed for burning three types of fuel: W/P/P (Wood/Paper/Plastic), RT-wood chips (wood waste) and forest wood chips. The main components included in the order scope are the fuel handling system, combustion grate, 36 MWt steam boiler and general decentralized control and monitoring system. The boiler generates steam at temperatures of up to 480 °C and a pressure of approx. 70 bar. The steam is utilized mainly for production of electricity, but a part of it is used by a local pharmaceutical industry. The surplus energy is delivered to the local district heating network, which brings the plant efficiency up to approx. 90%.
Babcock & Wilcox Vølund’s 11th order in Sweden since the year 2000
The order was won for the best technology and the lowest cost of operation and maintenance and for Babcock & Wilcox Vølund’s scope of supply the order sum is just about 200 million DKK. The order is the 11th order in Sweden since the year 2000 and brings us up to a turn-over of far more than one billion kroner. With this order the company consolidates and extends its presence and service basis in Sweden. The work on the construction site is scheduled to commence in September 2007 and the commissioning is scheduled to start in June 2008. The plant is expected to be taken over by the customer in February 2009.
