Steam boiler plant for the power plant H. C. Ørsted Værket, Copenhagen
On Thursday 30. September 2004 Energi E2 placed the order for a low pressure steam boiler plant for H.C. Ørsted Værket with Babcock & Wilcox Vølund. The order was conditional upon the conclusion of the district heating contract between E2 and Københavns Energi/CTR, which also fell into place on Thursday 30 September.
Two 100 MW oil fired steam boilers
The supply includes the delivery of 2 (two) 100 MW oil fired steam boilers with an operating pressure of 18 bar and a steam temperature of 300°C. Via pressure valves the plant will supply steam to the Copenhagen district heating network at a steam pressure between 9 and 17 bar.
With this order we have consolidated our sovereignty as suppliers of oil/gas fired water tube boilers in Denmark and through the execution of this project we have the opportunity of maintaining and updating this technology on a healthy business foundation.
Through the years tenders have only been invited for very few plants of this type in Denmark, so we are very proud that we have been able to win all the contracts.
Compared to our core business, which is biomass and waste-to-energy plants, the oil/gas boilers are less complex and thereby give us the possibility of adjusting and optimizing our project capacity.
The plant
The plant will be located in the old utility buildings at H.C. Ørsted Værket. This means that we have to perform the difficult, but challenging task of hoisting the boilers through the roof with one of the largest mobile cranes in the country.
Energi E2 are establishing the low pressure steam boiler plant at H.C. Ørsted Værket in order to generate peak load steam for the Copenhagen district heating network. Today there are two blocks and a steam header plant for generation of electricity and district heating water at H. C. Ørsted Værket. The steam header plant is provided with 4 old natural gas and oil fired high pressure steam boilers and a number of turbines. The boilers, originally coal fired, were built in the years 1963 to 1967 and converted to natural gas and oil firing in 1992.
Originally, the steam header plant was built as a base load plant for the district heating network, but with the establishment of later blocks, the operating time has been considerably reduced, and therefore the costs of keeping the plant in operation have grown out of proportion. Consequently, E2 have decided to shut down the steam header plant and establish low pressure steam boilers for peak load production instead.
Parallel to this conversion, E2 intend to carry out an extensive conversion of the existing block 1 at Amagerværket and in order to secure the required supply to the district heating system, the existing steam header plant at H. C. Ørsted Værket cannot be taken out of operation until this conversion has been carried out.
The boiler plant, which is to be placed in the existing buildings while the existing steam header plant remains in operation, is scheduled for commissioning at the end of 2005.
The boiler plant consists of feed pump system, boiler pressure part, combustion plant for fuel gas oil and natural gas (option), air and flue gas systems. The combustion plant consists of steam atomising burners with the possibility of pressure atomising during start-up.
The boiler plant is capable of fulfilling all applicable environmental requirements without the use of external cleaning.
