Högdalen - the largest unit yet undertaken by Babcock & Wilcox Vølund
With a combustion capacity of 37 tons waste an hour (9,2 MJ/kg) Högdalen P4 is the largest single unit yet undertaken by Babcock & Wilcox Vølund.
By using a combination of new and proven technology, this incinerator unit has been designed to fit into a small space between existing units at Högdalen.
The boiler, grate and feeding technologies
The boiler hangs from a steel support structure which doubles as the building structure. A BS feeding pusher with water-cooled chute is used to feed waste onto the grate, which is also water-cooled on the first three of the five grate sections.
Inconel cladding for protection of the boiler tubes
Inconel cladding is used to protect the boiler tubes on the first and second boiler passes, while a combination of water and steam blowers cleans the heating surfaces in the second and third boiler passes and economiser. The unit is designed for combustion of municipal and industrial waste.
The plant is being built for Fortum Värme together with Stockholm City and is due to be handed over in January 2005.
