Ferrox®-stabilisation

- A stabilisation process for combustion residues

Managing fly ash and semidry flue gas cleaning residue from waste incineration and other combustion residues in an environmentally safe way is difficult. The Ferrox®-stabilisation is developed to ensure safe handling and disposal of these residues.

The Ferrox®- process as a mean to manage combustion residues

Managing combustion residues are usually associated with high costs and an environmental risk. The Ferrox®-process is developed to manage combustion residues in an environmentally safe way at a low cost. Compared to the costs of a traditional cement stabilisation the Ferrox®-process has advantages in reducing the overall mass of the residue that has to be disposed combined with a good stabilisation.

The Ferrox®-process stabilises the residues, whereby the release of heavy metals and salts are substantially reduced compared to the untreated residues. The process does not yield a new heavy metal polluted waste stream, but immobilises the heavy metals in the residue. The salts are extracted from the residues during the process. The result is a stabilised residue, which is easy to dispose of in an environmentally safe way.

An illustration of the leaching process taking place in landfilled residues. Heavy metals are released from untreated APC-residue to the percolating rainwater and thereby spread to the environment, whereas the Ferrox®-stabilisation immobilises the heavy metals in the stabilised residues.
